Birding at Corpus Christi

The last day of my trip was planned to cover Cover Christi. I had visited this city before but for a brief visit. But this time I had planned to visit some of the birding sites and try my luck with "Aplamado Falcon" as well.

I started the day visiting the "Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center". There is a large pond with lot of tall grass around. I could see couple of large alligators in the lake. Also close by was a "Sora" which was feeding without giving much notice to me. In the lake I saw my first Leucistic "Common Gallinule". Also present were "Blue-winged Teal", "Mottled Duck", "Rudy Ducks" and "Gallinules". Also present were a "Green-winged Teal" and a "Pied-billed Grebe". In the trees close by we saw a "Baltimore Oriole", "Indigo Bunting" and "Common Yellow-throat".

After this I went to the Paradise Pond. Couple of birders had informed me that a "Lesser Nighthawk" was reported from this site. It was very easy to find the bird. I could also see my first "Yellow-rumped Warbler" of the trip. In the pond we saw "Common Gallinules", "American Coots", "Blue-winged Teals" and "Mottled Ducks". I also saw my first "Bronzed Cowbird" here which was in a mix of "Brown-headed cowbirds". The other birds I saw here were "Nashville Warbler" and "Tennessee Warblers" here.

From here I went to the Wetland park where I could see lot of shorebirds. We could see "Dowitchers", "Marbled Godwits", "American Avocets", "Black-necked Stilts" and "Great-blue Herons". And on the drive saw an "Osprey" and brief glimpse of an "Aplamado Falcon" which was resting on the wires along the road but flew away just as I was about to get down from my car to take a look. After this I headed towards Botanical Garden where a "Northern Jacana" was reported. The bird was still being seen feeding around the edge of the lake. I got to see the bird and the time was already 2 PM. I had to head towards Dallas which was a long drive from Corpus Christi and it was time to leave. It was a great trip and I hope I will get to do this again.
