K B Srinivas: Winter birds for the year 22-23

This winter I could only do 2 bird walks. And both the times I decided to visit Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge which is my favorite birding spot in Dallas. In December I saw most number of Snow/Ross's Geese there. Apart from that among the ducks I saw Northern Pintail's, Northern Shoveller's, Blue-winged Teals, Ruddy ducks, Gadwall's and American Wigeons.

The usual suspects of Sparrows were seen. I saw White-crowned, White-throated, Savannah, Lincoln, Harris and Song sparrows. I did see Vesper Sparrow for the first time in the park, only my second sighting of this bird. I also got to see the Spotted Towhee here. Still waiting to see my first Eastern Towhee. Among the woodpeckers I saw Downy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers. I did see a Pileated very closely but couldn't get any pictures. Still waiting to get a good picture of the America's largest woodpecker.

March first week was the another visit to the Hagerman NWR to see the ducks. This time there were very few Goose, couple of Yellowlegs and among ducks I saw Northern Shoveller, Blue-winged Teals, Gadwalls, Lesser Scaups and American Wigeons. But there were couple of other interesting ducks I saw after a while, I saw a lone Canvasback, few Redheads, Buffleheads and lone GoldenEye. Canvasback and GoldenEye are my just second sighting of these birds.

Among the other birds I saw were lot of sparrows White-throated Sparrow, Lincoln Sparrow and Savannah Sparrows. I did see some American Robin's and couple of Loggerhead Shrike's.
